The following instructions are intended for faculty and instructors.
In order to ensure that all readings and other library materials are available for your students in print and online, follow the checklist below
Check the catalogue ( CATALOGUE ) before sending in Course Reserves form.
If a book, article, video or other item is not in the catalogue, create a New Items form
Course reserves form link is here: https://machform.nscad.ca/view.php?id=300768
New items form is here: https://machform.nscad.ca/view.php?id=325273
Ensure that your reserves and new items lists are in MLA, APA, or Chicago format
You must check the catalogue to ensure items are in the library's collection.
The Course reserve request form is for print books, media items and other materials that are in the Library's collections. Reserves are kept at the Library's circulation desk for your students to use.
To request new course materials that are not owned by the library, use the New Items Request form.
If your required course readings include chapters from print books, the library will first check if a multi-user eBook is available to purchase.
The Library only purchases eBooks and streamed videos from vendors that provide multi-user licences for academic libraries.
If an eBook is not available, the Library can create a scan of a chapter to include in your course's Brightspace page.
The Library provides scanned PDFs that meet accessibility requirements whenever possible.
For copyright legislation reasons, scanned readings may only be shared through your Brightspace course site. Please see the Library’s copyright FAQ for more info: https://library.nscad.ca/copyrightpages#upload
If you are requesting course readings that constitute more than 10% of a work (monograph, anthology, journal, etc.) a transactional copyright license may be required. This can take at least 2 or more weeks to clear.
Video and published content from platforms such as Netflix, Criterion Channel and Amazon are not licensed for academic use.
Requests should be sent as soon as possible. If you don't yet have a finalized reading list, send a preliminary list in the form as soon as you can.
Please do not send a syllabus as your reading list.
The NSCAD Library can only provide URLs for Brightspace use to the following types of electronic resources:
For resources which the NSCAD Library does not own in print, have a license to use, or which exceed fair dealing guidelines, the appropriate permissions will be sought out. In cases where permissions are not attainable, we will work with you to find alternatives. To learn more about copyright and fair dealing please refer to following resources:
